This week I picked up a New York Times to get the update on fashion week. I was eager to find out what influenced designers, and how they were going to express it through there designs.
The design team of Valentino, Pierpaolo Piccioli and Maria Grazia Chiuri, stated, “Fashion has to reflect and respond to the times you are living in.” I love that statement. Fashion is art, and I think there is no better way to express yourself then through what you place on your body. Any influence that is used in fashion is then advertised to everyone, so taking influence from current times is perfect for expressing everything around you in that moment.
Then there was Raf Simons for Christian Dior who decided to take people not only through current times, but every year leading up to now, Vanessa Friedman wrote, – “'romance of the 50s, the experimentation of the 60s, liberation of the 70s.‘” Who doesn’t like a good fashion time lapse, and getting to see it through Dior?

Some took to more traditional influences. Giambattista Valli saw the elegance of Coco Chanel but the American heresy of Janice Joplin. Valli’s collection was one of my favorites for capturing both so well. He kept the lady-like-feel of fashion with pastels and peplum tops, but was able to add edginess with trousers, blazers, and capes.
Chanel appeared to crave warmer weather although the designs were made for winter. Material canvases filled with floral accents, and delicate materials made up the clothing that was put on Chanel’s runway. You may think, how could this make up a winter collection, Chanel made it seem as though winter is warm. Taking warmer accents and creating it into colder wear is something I think everyone wants, and Chanel succeeded.
As Vanessa Friedman wrote, “..you know it’s a complicated new world. They’re just dressing people for it.”
